| Family briefing Background Dyslexia is a “hidden disability” – that is, you can’t tell a person experiences dyslexia just by looking at them. In this way, it is similar to other “hidden” conditions like epilepsy, depression, heart disease or diabetes. Up to 65% of all disability is “hidden”. There is a lack of agreement among the “experts” about what causes dyslexia and what the “symptoms” are. Some say there is no such thing. In one way, this is a good thing; it is how scientific knowledge moves forward. I have one theory about dyslexia and you have a different theory; which one is best at explaining the evidence? Although we know about theories of dyslexia, at HDL we have a practical approach. We provide solutions rather than academic discussion. Many local education authorities do not recognise dyslexia. Many teachers have similar viewpoints. They are not trained to recognise dyslexia unless they go on additional courses. TV and newspapers are often guilty of sensationalising dyslexia. You may have seen television programmes claiming “The Myth of Dyslexia”, or read about dyslexia being a “middle class excuse” for poor academic performance. The critical point is that the Law, the Government and the Disability Rights Commission recognise that dyslexia exist. Most experts agree that up to 10% of people experience a degree of dyslexia. At least 2 people in every 100 will experience serious difficulties because they are dyslexic. People can always rely on the plain truth from HDL. We are not linked with any school or local education authority. We never “sit on the fence” or use half-hearted terms such as “dyslexic tendencies”. Our main interest is your main interest: What parents can expect from school
